Walking: An Overlooked Pathway of Restorative Therapy

Walking: An Overlooked Pathway of Restorative Therapy

Trail user Jeff Howe tells the story of his restoration through exercise and walking on the Cardinal Greenways.

It was July 2018 when my life was forever changed. A serious motorcycle accident left me with multiple injuries, the most significant being to my right hip and leg—injuries that would affect me for the rest of my life. The road ahead was daunting, filled with countless hospital stays, 27 doctors, and five surgeries. By the end of 2020, after enduring a grueling recovery journey, I made the difficult decision to retire from my 40-year career. I was finally ready to focus on what mattered most: my health.

The initial months of recovery were challenging. I progressed from relying on a wheelchair to using a walker, then crutches, a cane, and eventually walking unassisted. Each step was a small victory, but I longed for something more—something that would help me reclaim the time lost sitting in a chair. That’s when I discovered an often-overlooked path to good health: walking.

At first, I ventured out for short walks in my neighborhood. As my strength grew, I found myself drawn to the gym and the local greenways and trails. Muncie, Indiana’s Cardinal Greenways became my sanctuary—a place where I could reconnect with nature and myself. With each visit, I felt a sense of freedom that had eluded me for so long. The vibrant colors of the changing seasons and, when I wasn’t plugged into my classic rock playlist, the sounds of birds chirping filled me with appreciation for the beauty that surrounded me.

Walking along the Greenway quickly became an essential part of my routine. It wasn’t just about physical exercise; it was about healing my spirit. The friendly faces of fellow walkers and our brief conversations added a social dimension that brightened my days. These interactions reminded me that I wasn’t alone in my journey; we were all there seeking good health and connection in our own ways.
As I began to track my progress, I was amazed by how far I had come. In 2022, I logged over 2,000 miles in my sneakers. The following year, I pushed myself even further and covered nearly 2,800 miles. Now, as we approach the end of 2024, I’ve reached just over 2,400 miles—and, while the odds may be stacking against me, I’m striving to beat last year’s record.

Walking the Cardinal Greenway trails has provided me with numerous benefits beyond just physical fitness. I’ve experienced improved cardiovascular health and stronger muscles while enjoying low-impact exercise that is easy on my joints. Equally important, it has deepened my appreciation for nature and the community I am so fortunate to call home.To anyone reading this who may be considering their own journey toward better health—whether you’re recovering from an injury or simply looking to improve your quality of life—I encourage you to explore our local trails.
