Planning your next trip to the Cardinal Greenway? Make sure you know the condition of the trail as well as which sections of the trail are closed and the detours to get around closures.
Flood Damage Closures:
2026 has been an unprecedented year. Following the historic flooding this summer, there are a few sections of trail that are closed because the trail was washed out significantly.
There are no official detours around these portions of trail. Trail users should exercise extreme caution while utilizing roadways to navigate around these sections.
Throughout 2026, there are a variety of construction projects that will directly impact the trail. Each of these projects has either begun or will begin soon. Be sure to plan accordingly around these sections of trail.
Construction Closures:
Wayne County
SR 35 Closure:
- For trail users traveling to trailheads in the northern Wayne County area, SR 35 will be closed between SR 1 and Economy due to bridge repairs over the Whitewater River (just east of the SR 35 and SR 1 intersection). This closure is slated to begin sometime this Spring and last 6 months.
Railroad Repairs:
- While work is slated to begin, there is no official closure date set.
- Closure from D Street to Sim Hodgin Parkway Bridge
- Trail users should plan to utilize the Union Pk. trailhead or the trail connector from Springwood Park.
INDOT I-70 Expansion: Closure from Industries Rd. to Wayne Rd.
- INDOT has performed most of the work affecting the trail, so at this time, the trail is open. However, trail closures are still likely from time to time as INDOT performs ongoing construction on the interstate.
- There will be no official detour around the I-70 expansion project. In effect, the trail will end at Wayne Rd. for trail users traveling from the north towards the closure, and likewise, the trail will end at Industries Rd. for trail users traveling from the south towards the closure. Please plan your trips accordingly.
- For trail users planning a two-day trip between Muncie and Richmond, we recommend starting your journey at the Tingler Rd. Trailhead then heading north to Muncie for overnight accommodations before returning to the Tingler Rd. Trailhead.

Kitselman Phase III: Closure from Burlington Dr. to Brady St. (See Detour Map)
Detour Details:
From the north:

- turn right (south) to reconnect with the Cardinal Greenway
From the south:

- turn left (north) onto Brady St.
- turn left (west) to reconnect with the Cardinal Greenway
Long-Term Trail Surface Reconstruction (north of Muncie from Riggin Rd. to CR 525 W.)
We are currently restoring sections of the trail north of Muncie. This stretch is one of the oldest sections of the trail system — nearly 30 years old — and requires significant repair work due to underlying surface issues. During construction, portions of the trail will be ground down and re-compacted. These areas will remain as hard-packed asphalt grindings until funding is secured for final paving. Please use extra caution when walking, running, or riding through this section of the trail. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to preserve and improve the trail for everyone.
Periodic Closures
Throughout the year, there will also be periodic closures on the trail for various projects including asphalt repaving. Be sure to respect all trail closed signs as well as our staff, volunteers, and contactors as they work to keep the Cardinal Greenway in tip-top shape.
